Veryl Ingellvar Writing Characterization Cheat Sheet | Ver. 1.0
Tumblr media
(May 17, 2025) I tried to put this into easy terms, things that I would want to know if I was trying to write her for the first time. I Frankensteined together a bunch of different cheat sheets and made my own changes, but was ultimately inspired by the folks over in the Rooks Roost
There is room for interpretations within this, of course. But it is SUPER in depth (but there are still things that need expanding) I reserve the right to edit this with changes (I’ll date them) At some point this will absolutely lead to writing her as a companion. Fanart and Fanfic permissions: Absolutely! Throw her into a Volcano! Make her babysit a child! Have her make people coffee! Make her eat cheese! Make her kiss somebody's dad!
General:
Full name: Veryl Ingellvar (Abelshauser if your character is Ingellvar) The Spectre/Spectre (if referring to her work at the Grand Necropolis before the War of Banners)

Body: Boney but gaining weight after leaving the Necropolis. | Lean and muscular. | Long Limbs |
- Not picky about the clothes she wears but generally leans towards simple and non-fussy. Prefers leathers when fighting, anything that easy to move freely in. Isn't necessarily keen to be associated with the Mourn Watch and prefers to wear nondescript things that let her sink into a background unnoticed. - No tattoos or piercings. - Has scars along her lower back and hands and between her fingers.
General Likes: Physical touch | sunlight | snow | dumb jokes\bad jokes | smiling | reading, studying, research) | new foods | discussions and debates | sparring | dancing | cats | flowers | reading headstones | black tea with honey and lemon | Chamomile with a little salt. Anger: Deathly silent and even toned | No mincing words or miscommunication
Cursing: Yes but it's not constant, and usually for emphasis or to make a point.
Combat: Yelling and attention grabbing | minimal communication in action, heavy discussion before and after the fact ──────────────────────── History: - Found in Necropolis but given to an over-run orphanage in Nevarra City - Had to scrape and scrounge to survive with the other children - Adopted at eleven by noble family who developed her skills, treated like an attack dog, family pet, it was a very abusive situation - Taught piano and rogue training before eventually joining the Mortalitasi and then recruited to Mourn Watch training, passing the tests, taking her oaths. - Wasn't allowed to have friends - Lived at the library, became a speed reader - Served on a special team in the necropolis as a Mourn Watch Rogue that was more or less unrecognized by the Mourn Watch Council - Organized/ Participated in underground street fights - Killed more than her fair share of targets on command - Burned down an orphanage - Sexual rebellion in her younger years led to a loss of fertility and a sexual reservation in her current years - The War of Banners disbanded her team and led to a betrayal that would have her removed from the Necropolis but protected from the Undead Nobles that would have seen her killed for her brash actions.

do u have a reccomendation for what form of shorthand to learn first. deeply interested-- i saw ur reply on that one post and then u seem cool so i just followed u and figured i would ask here
hello !!! thank you for asking !!!!!!!!!! and im so sorry this is so long lol
If you want my biased personal recommendation, I would suggest Pitman New Era. That's what I use, and I think its the best balance of efficiency vs difficulty to learn, and I like that the learning curve is such that, as you learn, you apply more rules that simplify the writing process more (meaning that earlier practice is still legible, if far less efficient). This compared to other forms (like Gregg) where, as you learn, youre just kind of generally suffering and trying to get your brain to memorise things and differentiate very similar looking strokes. I find Pitman also lends itself well to using in conjunction with other "standard" writing styles so you can take notes that are enough in "standard" writing to be skimmable while using enough shorthand to be much faster to write, basically maninmising writeing AND reading speed. [example below]
Tumblr media
You can skip to the end for resources for Pitman and shorthand in general if this answer is sufficient :)
If you want a horrifically long, massively autistic answer that breaks down the three most popular/common styles, then thats what the rest of the post is !! It is so fucking long I am so sorry
Horrifically Long Answer:
I'm answering on the assumption that you would be learning for use with english. If you want to learn shorthand for another language there are a variety of options however I am less versed in them :( I'm also assuming you're asking out of personal interest rather than vocational, since certain jobs will recommend or require you learn certain styles of shorthand and it would be best to defer to that.
The most popular methods are Gregg, the various forms of Pitman (this is what I use), and Teeline. Gregg and Pitman are phonemic while Teeline is alphabetical. There are also a huge number of other, less popular forms of shorthand (as well as shorthand systems which are popular in/made for other languages). If you're interested in learning about these, check out the subreddit listed at the end of this post under "resources".
Teeline:
I know much less about Teeline, so I'll go into it less, but basically it is a "spelling-based" shorthand system -- that is, it is based off the standard spelling of words. It replaces latin letters which different forms that are faster to write and can be connected more efficiently, while removing extraneous letters from words. It is simpler to learn, in part because it is spelling-based, and also because it has fewer rules which further consolidate and shorten word forms. Due to this, it is ultimately much slower to write than the other two systems mentioned here (although you can still get up to good speeds !!). Like the other shorthand systems, you can learn to a more basic extent, or learn more advanced theory to maximise its capability and speed. Teeline is very standard for journalism and overall quite popular for professional use, however it is still in copyright and so there are far fewer resources available online. If you are interested in taking classes, however, I would assume those are available.
Teeline TL;DR: alphabetical, simplest to learn but less efficient, popular, still in copyright so fewer resources.
examples of Teeline:

Pitman and Gregg: Phonemic Systems and Regional Accents:
As mentioned, Gregg and Pitman are phonemic. If you dont have any practice with phonemic writing systems, you might have luck starting out with shavian just to practice. also because shavian is fun :) (its one of the writing systems in my header !) Im saying this partly because I want more people to learn shavian and partly because I learned Shavian long before I learned Pitman and found that having that practice was helpful. In particular, if you have any accent other than RP, its helpful for figuring out either which vowel sounds and phonetic spellings are relevant to your accent and your pronunciation, or, should you choose to go a "standard" (RP) route, how certain words should be spelled despite how you may pronounce them. Using a "standard" RP approach can be helpful if you want people to more easily be able to read your writing or want to "match" the dictionary, but someone well versed in shorthand should be able to figure it out no matter what, and if its just for your personal use I'd suggest just going by your own regional pronunciations.
Pitman:
Pitman was an early shorthand system developed in the early to mid 1800s. It used to be the most popular shorthand system, however nowadays has been eclipsed in popularity by Teeline and/or Gregg, depending on the country and occupational context. However, it remains popular among enthusiasts and there are significant amount of resources available for learners and practitioners.
The main thing to know with Pitman is that words are built using different strokes for each consonant sound, and symbols attached to these consonants to mark vowels. These consonant sounds are differentiated by shape as well as line thickness. Voiced and unvoiced pairs of consonants (eg., T and D, C and G, S and Z, etc.) are designated using the same strokes, with the voiced consonant of the pair being thicker than the other. This line variation is something which is normally achieved with a pencil, though I mostly use fountain pens to write and so I use flex nibs to achieve the same effect.
Vowels are marked with certain dots or dashes placed along corresponding consonant markings, For increased writing speed, most vowel markings can also be left off in Pitman, and instead where on the line the first stroke begins serves to signal the first vowel.
Pitman uses short forms (also called "logograms" or "grammalogues," depending on the version and book you use) which are abbreviated forms of commonly used words (see picture below for a few examples). Different versions of Pitman have different numbers of grammalogues.
With Pitman, efficiency is increased through a combination of memorising various short forms and implementing rules which simplify strokes. (Examples of these can be seen in the picture below. probably need to click to be able to actually see anything rip) This allows you to have certain "levels" of complexity, where as you learn more complex rules you increase in efficiency, but you can also eschew some of those rules if they are too complex for you without sacrificing legibility to you or proficient practitioners. Probably someone somewhere on reddit has something to say about that but tbh who gives a fuck. You can do whatever you want forever. Its known to be very common for people to come up with their own personal shortcuts and variations in whatever shorthand system they use, and imo sometimes that just means looking at a rule and going "well thats stupid👍" and ignoring it. Pitman can seem really intimidating, however just remember that you can ignore rules for as long as you want until they are less intimidating to learn and apply.
There are 3 "main" versions of Pitman: the original system, Pitman New Era, and Pitman 2000. New Era has the most complex system of rules and abbreviations, while 2000 simplified many of these and got rid of most of the abbreviations. I personally use New Era, in part because I was able to access more resources for this, but largely because I found the increased number of rules and abbreviations to be better in the long run. If you are willing to invest more time and effort into learning a more complicated system, with the tradeoff that it will be faster and easier once you are proficient, you should learn New Era. The main benefit of 2000 is that the rules are simplified. I would say, however, that the downsizing of the list of abbreviations is not a benefit. While it in theory requires you to memorise more individual symbols, in practice these abbreviations are commonly used enough that they can become automatic with very little practice. If you decide to learn 2000, I would suggest taking he time to go through the list of abbreviations from New Era and, if not learning all of them, picking out the ones you think you are likely to use with semi-regularity. If you compile them into a cheat sheet and hand it next to your desk, they should be easy to practice using and become memorised really quickly. I myself dont have every abbreviation memorised, but instead focused on ones i use regularly, and often go through the list again to pick out new ones to learn and add to my lexicon as I think they may be used.
Pitman TL;DR: phonemic, differentiates strokes through line thickness, rules can be applied or discarded as best suits your practice without sacrificing readability. Increased speed and efficiency is achieved through extra short forms for commonly used words, and rules which simplify strokes.
examples of Pitman:

[first image mine, other two images sourced from Long Live Pitman's (website, linked below), and wiki]
Gregg:
Gregg is a very popular form of shorthand which utilises round, smooth strokes with the intent of increasing writing efficiency and legibility.
Where Pitman uses variation in line thickness to differentiate between strokes, Gregg uses line length. Both consonants and vowels are marked with designated strokes (compared to Teeline, which has vowel strokes but tends to omit them where possible, and Pitman, which adds vowel marking to consonant strokes or signals vowels through figure placement), and vowels are largely kept in-line. With Gregg, efficiency is achieved through the use of short forms, prefixes, and suffixes; "phrasing", (wherein certain phrases, such as "I may be," "one of the most," "by the," etc. are combined into a single stroke); as well as through the more efficient way in which strokes are joined together into words.
Left-handed people sometimes write Gregg from right to left.
Like Pitman, there are a number of different versions of Gregg, however Gregg seems to have significantly more versions and significantly less consensus around which version is best or why. I am not the best person to give advice on which one is best or information on the different types, so if you decide to go with Gregg I'd suggest checking out the subreddit or some of the other resources linked below for information on that.
examples of Gregg:

Comparisons:
I would say that one of the main things to consider if choosing between Gregg and Pitman is which you think is more intuitive to read and write for you. Which sounds obvious lol but like. as an example. I struggle with spatial awareness and stuff like estimating lengths so for me Gregg is not a good option since it differentiates certain consonants through their length and I would have a hard time writing those consistently or easily reading them. Pitman is easier for me in that regard, as well as since it is more "choppy" (for lack of better word) which makes it much easier for me to recognise certain words without having to break them down, as well as making it easier for me to break them down to read them should I need to. On the other hand, some people find Gregg to be easier since its much "smoother" and flowier to write, which can be much faster and more intuitive for some.
Compared to Pitman, Gregg has significantly fewer rules to learn, making it in theory simpler, however, due to the way it is written, it requires significantly more practice to be able to consistently properly write and tell apart certain letters, words, and phrases. Once you are proficient in this, it is by far more efficient, however Gregg is very difficult to use while you are still figuring it out. Pitman, on the other hand, has significantly more rules, however you can continue to easily use it as you learn these rules and add them into your practice. The downside of this is that once you are fully proficient, it is less efficient than full proficiency Gregg. Essentially, the main difficulty with learning Gregg is telling apart different strokes and writing them so that they can be differentiated, while the main difficulty with Pitman is in learning the rules.
I havent talked much about Teeline because honestly I know far less about it, because it is so much harder to find resources on, and honestly because I'm a bit of an old man and personally prefer the older styles lol. Its popular for a reason, though !
I know it probably sounds like I'm shilling a lot for Pitman, however thats just because its what I use and know the most about, as well as because it is what works best for my unique considerations. Most people would probably be more likely to recommend Gregg (for a number of very good reasons !), however when I was first deciding which shorthand system to learn I saw very few people making the points that were most relevant to me (eg, that pitman can be used AS you learn, whereas Gregg is more of a "its useless until you actually have it down" situation, that Gregg is really difficult if you struggle with differentiating lengths, etc) so I feel the need to mention them
TL;DR: Everything:
Ultimately you should use whatever you think is best for you :) I'd say Teeline is your best bet if you are in journalism, or want something easier. Gregg is best if you want something popular, smoother to write, and extremely fast, and are willing and able to put in significant amounts of consistent work and practice to master it. Pitman is best if you want something you can use as you learn, and that's somewhere in between Teeline and Gregg in terms of difficulty and efficiency. If you wanted, you could probably learn Teeline as well as either Pitman or Gregg, but learning both Pitman and Gregg would be much more difficult.
Other:
I take all my notes by hand, generally using a mix of palmer method cursive and pitman shorthand to do so, however, I also have to write a lot of papers, and when I do, I get frustrated at having to type out whole words I normally write in shorthand. This is kind of the curse of shorthand, you get really annoyed having to type out "because". To deal with this, while typing in a word processor, I use an alphabetic shorthand I've come up with over time. I basically input a bunch of auto-replacements into my spellcheck, so that I can have shortcuts for commonly used words set up. so basically i can write: "here, . cnstrctn ` ntnl idntty served to lgtmse the ntn stte" and it will autocorrect to "here, the construction of national identity served to legitimise the nation state". Highly recommend this if you do a lot of writing, especially if a lot of the same topics and words come up a lot. Use whatever shortened versions feel intuitive for you, instead of something you've consciously + intentionally constructed, otherwise youre more likely to forget them or have them get mixed up.
Resources:
stenophile.com has a huge number of shorthand resources linked, particularly for Gregg and Pitman. If you end up choosing either of these I'd suggest starting here to find instruction books.
this website can transliterate into Pitman and Gregg, DEK and Stolze-Schrey (two German shorthand systems), and Sütterlinschrift (a historical German script)(also in my header !)
r/fastwriting is run by a very nice very dedicated man who posts a huge amount of content and resources on various shorthand methods, including lesser known ones. If you decide you want to learn/learn about a different shorthand system, he's the guy to talk to. This subreddit differs from r/shorthand or system-specific subreddits like r/greggshorthand, as those are more discussion-based for learners and practitioners, while r/fastwriting is better for research and being autistic. R/shorthand does have a number of resources listed for more popular shorthand systems, and is a good place to go for advice while learning.
Teeline:
blog with a few free resources
Pitman:
Pitman New Era Instructor and Dictionary. These are what I largely used to learn.
Long Live Pitman's: a website dedicated to Pitman, full of good information for beginning learners.
if you learn Pitman, as mentioned the line variation can be accomplished with a pencil, however if you want to get a bit fancy with it while staying on a budget, Fountain Pen Revolution carries a number of cheap yet reliable fountain pens with flex nibs, such as the FPR Indus or Himalaya. I'd suggest the steel flex rather than the ultra-flex for shorthand unless you have a lighter hand or have practiced with a flex pen before. I've also heard good things about the Noodler's Ahab pen but honestly find its very temperamental, needs tweaking (not ideal if youre a fp beginner) and just not as good. Both FPR and Noodler's pens are made of bioresin and must be kept away from solvents like isopropyl alcohol !!!
Gregg:
Gregg Phrasebook. Short guide to phraseology for Gregg
Gregg-shorthand.com: seems like a good place to start for learning Gregg. Answers some beginner's questions, and provides learning aids and reading material (transliterated into Gregg)
r/greggshorthand
greggshorthand.gibhub.io: a more in depth website with a number of book pdfs and lessons for various forms of Gregg.

The only differences are the additions of the numbers written in pencil. These are most likely acquisition numbers assigned by the postcard shop that bought the collection as whole and is now selling it off as individual cards.

Palmer snaps his teeth shut. The implant springs to life.
[roll: 3- Psionic Blast]
Fine. One gloved hand raises. The concussive blast rattles and splinters a hole right through the center of the door, showering Artemis and anyone else inside with debris in the process.
Charlie fucking Palmer- Gunslinger. A name to fear when it's known, which is rarely outside of very specific circles. Wearing HARD corps red, black, and white, the soldier's not fucking around, and he's wasted enough time already. He powers through the door, fist first, all snarls and violence. As if the thrown punch wasn't enough, he's fired off the second blast with it- a force hard enough to crack ribs, bruise muscle, and occasionally blow eardrums or eyeballs. That last one's relatively rare- and very gross.
He doesn't know it yet, but in a decade, he's going to spend a LOT of his fifties dealing with eyeballs....

Marenkes: Architecture Through The Ages
Tumblr media Tumblr media
0-130 Nomadic Era
Forsaken by the Gods, beset by creatures that could only be described as demons, the people of Marenkes were forced to abandon their permanent structure homes in order to go on the run and survive. As such, architecture needed to be portable, as easy to take down as it was to put up, so tents were the mainstay for this era. Function rather than form, most tents were unadorned hide over a simple wooden structure, with woven fabric being incorporated as the years went on and people managed to scrape together enough time to create textiles. Due to the very real chance that they may need to flee for their lives before they could pack up their tents, people rarely wasted time on decorating their structures, instead saving the personalization for things that they would be almost guaranteed to be able to take with them at a moment's notice, such as their clothes and weapons.
Tumblr media
130-4000 Theocratic Era
Under the guidance and protection of the gods, the people of Marenkes flourished, spreading across the globe and setting up permanent residences. Nearly every facet of life was dedicated to the veneration of the gods, and so religious iconography was everywhere when it came to architecture. Thanks to the stability of their new way of life, wood, clay, stone, and metal became the go-to building materials. Statuary, murals, stained glass, mosaics, all of these opulent works of art were created with one goal in mind - to highlight the glory of the gods. The style is overwrought, the "too-much gene" on full display: bright colours, precious metals and stones, a confusing cacophony of images. This is meant to overwhelm the viewer, to make them feel small when viewing the splendour of the divine. Magic is used to fill religious buildings with light, while people are forced to use flames or rely on outside lighting to illuminate their homes. Only in-home shrines were allowed to be lit with magical means, and so people would often have them in the central living spaces in their home. This was by the design of the gods, to keep themselves central in the lives of their followers.
Tumblr media
4000-8000 Rebellion Era
Tired of being under the thumb of divinity, some people fled to the Zielsten caverns underground, where they were shielded from the sight of the gods. Using magic, they were able to shape Zielsten into dwellings. Some favoured having buildings made entirely from Zielsten, while others would use Zielsten as framing, over which they would attach a facade of clay or stone. Others, still, prefer wholly stone or clay buildings. Above ground, during the earlier parts of this era, architecture changed little in terms of both design and building material. If anything, the religious designs became more overt than they already were, as the gods tightened their grip on the followers that they still had. With the introduction of the Opiri to the ecosystem, and their resilient carapaces, the empty shells of these creatures were integrated into the architectural styling of dwellings both above and below ground.
Tumblr media
8000-8700 Advancement Era
Free from divine constraints, yet under constant threat from the now unchecked Opiri, defensible fortifications became the mainstay in this era. Thanks to an unfettered industrial revolution, techniques were developed to render down the solid Opiri carapaces into a more malleable substance - Opiri Concrete. This bone white material became the all-but-exclusive building material of the age. The architecture of this age was more brutalist, built for function more than form. With the advent of indoor lighting that wasn't fire or solar/lunar reliant, windows fell out of fashion, as they were a structural weakness against constant Opiri attacks. Only those with money to spare, or a statement to make, would clad their homes in wood or stone facades. As time progressed, lighting features became more and more elaborate, and so by the tail end of this era, neon marquees and holographic displays festooned the slab-like faces of every building, a technicolour overlay on a brutal world.
Tumblr media
8700-8800 Eschaton Era
Thanks to an unknown disaster that rendered the surface of the world uninhabitable, the people of Marenkes were once again forced to make their homes underground, moving into the long abandoned Zielsten structures of their ancestors. This was a period of architectural rediscovery and experimentation, moving away from the cacophonous designs of their religious history, and the stark brutalism of their more recent past, into more open, welcoming layouts.
Tumblr media
8800-9600 Modern Era
Upon returning to a revitalized surface, people discovered that the Opiri Concrete ruins left behind were still mostly usable, though the technique of creating Opiri Concrete had been lost. Instead, people would break down shattered slabs into bricks, and mortar those together in order to build their dwellings. Thanks to the advent of the Opiri Slayers, the Opiri became less and less of a threat, and so more buildings in the latter half of this era were built with other, more easily workable materials. Rather than the hegemonic oversight of the gods or the government dictating the architectural style of the day, people instead began building homes in response to the ecosystem they lived in, using local materials to keep out the unique climate in the places they decided to call home. As such, architectural style in the modern age is more varied than any other in the history of Marenkes.

Garcia burst into the bullpen like some sort of whirlwind that was practically painted in neon, her scarf fluttering behind her almost like a cape. She juggled a precariously full cup of coffee, while her phone teetered between ear and shoulder as if testing the limits of human dexterity.
"I swear to all that is holy, if my life doesn't slow down in the next five minutes —"
The sentence derailed as she misjudged her pace, the coffee sloshing dangerously close to the rim of the cup. She stopped abruptly, but not quick enough to stop the scalding liquid from spilling over and searing her fingers.
"Oh, fantastic! Just what I needed!" she huffed, waving her hand like it might stop the sting.
She threw herself into the closest chair with a dejected sigh, slumping back and fixing the coffee cup with a murderous glare, like this was just another tally in a long line of grievances.
Your eyes darted up from your work, only for a moment, enough to confirm what you already knew. You hadn't been working here long, but it was long enough to recognize the phenomenon that was Garcia: a blur of movement and words, mid-rant before anyone had the chance to catch up. It was like clockwork really.
You risked a glance across the desk at Spencer, who was so absorbed in his notebook it was a wonder he even remembered to breathe. If Garcia's antics registered as white noise to anyone, it was him. But then, almost like he had a radar for being watched, he looked up, catching your gaze.
His eyebrows lifted into a subtle what can you do? expression, and you couldn't help but smile back.
That was the thing about Spencer. He had this uncanny knack for knowing exactly what you were thinking, almost as if he had a cheat sheet for your brain. And maybe he did, like his brain worked three times faster than everyone else's in the room (which, let's face it, it definitely did). But instead of that being intimidating, it was oddly reassuring.
"At this rate, I'm one bad email away from alphabetizing my entire pantry for stress relief."
Spencer's notebook hit the desk, and there it was, the shift you loved to look for. His shoulders drew back, face lighting up, the kind of thing that signaled his mini-lecture was incoming.
"Organizing your pantry is actually a practical stress management technique. By categorizing items, you create a structured environment that reduces decision fatigue. Its why people feel calmer in tidy spaces, it's psychological."
Morgan held up a hand. "Psychological, huh? Sounds like you’re just trying to justify your weird love affair with labels, pretty boy.”
“Don’t forget,” you added absently, flipping a page in your report, “it also saves time when you’re cooking. I think you called it practical efficiency."
The words slipped out without much thought, but as soon as they did, the bullpen stilled. You glanced up, heart sinking as you saw every face turned in your direction.
Morgan’s grin was the first thing you notice, wide and knowing, stretching across his face. He tilted his head, eyes bouncing between you and Spencer like he was putting pieces together in real time.
“Wait a minute,” he said, sitting forward with a gleam in his eye. “Did you just quote him? Like, word for word?”
Your cheeks heated instantly. “What? No. I mean — maybe. I don’t know.”
“Pretty sure you did,” Morgan shot back, smirking. “Man, what else has he been teaching you? You got the periodic table memorized too?”
You rolled your eyes, leaning back in your chair. “Oh, please. If you’ve been around Spencer long enough, you’re bound to pick up a few things. He’s like a walking encyclopedia.”
“Well,” Spencer said, his head tilting slightly as he spoke, “your cinnamon sticks always end up at the back of your pantry. That’s why I figured you might appreciate the idea of organizing by use frequency. Like I said, practical efficiency.”
The moment the words left his mouth, you knew he’d made a tactical error.
Garcia gasped, her eyes lighting up like she’d just been handed the juiciest piece of gossip of her life.
“Oh. My. God. Spencer Reid, how exactly do you know what the back of her pantry looks like?”
You froze, rooted to the spot as the realization hit you like a cartoon anvil.
This was bad.
Spencer’s expression mirrored yours for half a second, bug-eyed panic, but he quickly scrambled for an answer.
“It’s, um… a logical assumption,” he stammered, his fingers toying with the pen in his hand, a nervous tell he couldn’t quite suppress. “Spices like cinnamon sticks always seem to migrate to the back of the pantry unless there’s an intentional system in place.”
Morgan let out a long, low whistle, rocking back in his chair with enough force to make it creak.
“Nice save. But I don’t think Garcia’s buying it.”
Garcia tapped her chin, clearly enjoying herself far too much. “Oh, no, no, no. This is too good. I mean, logical assumption  my fabulous behind! Cinnamon sticks in the back of her pantry? Really? What’s next? A detailed analysis of how she stacks her cereal boxes?”
You laughed, though it sounded more like a bark than anything natural. “You’re all reading way too much into this. Spencer just knows weirdly specific things about, well, everything. That’s kind of his thing, remember?”
“Mmhmm,” Garcia hummed, clearly unconvinced. “Alright, genius, I’ll let it slide this time. But I’m watching you.”
“Please don’t,” Spencer muttered under his breath, earning a round of laughter from the team.
Garcia spent a solid ten minutes in full interrogation mode after that, her eyes narrowing with each and every pointed question she lobbed your way. Morgan, of course, was no help. He leaned back, grinning like a kid with a front-row seat to the circus, his smirk practically screaming that he knew they were this close to striking a nerve.
Spencer and you had been so careful. You'd been dating long before you joined the BAU, but the moment Hotch had called to offer you the position, you both knew you'd have to keep things under wraps. Dating a coworker was one thing; dating Spencer Reid, a genius with an accidentally too-honest mouth, was an entirely different challenge.
You hadn't expected it to be this hard, though. Keeping the secret wasn't the worst part, it was pretending he wasn't the center of your universe every time you walked into the room. It was keeping your hands to yourself when all you wanted to do was smooth out the messy strands of hair that always fell into his eyes. It was biting your tongue when someone interrupted his long-winded tangents because the truth was, you loved hearing him talk.
The hours stretched on, and the bullpen slowly thinned out. Garcia was the first to leave, blowing a kiss to the room. Morgan left soon after, pausing to flash you one last grin before disappearing. Even Prentiss packed up for the night, muttering something about needed an extra shot of espresso tomorrow morning.
"You handled that well."
You looked up from your report to find Spencer by your desk, one hand tucked into his pocket, the other skimming lightly along the edge of the divider. His expression was surprisingly soft, almost bashful, as though he had been waiting to get you alone.
"Handled that well?" you repeated, raising an eyebrow. "You were the one who almost blew it, Spencer. Cinnamon sticks? Really?"
He smiled, lips twitching upward as he shifted his weight from one foot to the other. "Okay, I'll admit that wasn't my most subtle moment. But in my defense, they do end up at the back of most pantries."
You couldn't help but laugh, shaking your head as you leaned back in your chair.
"We're lucky Garcia got distracted. If she'd pushed any harder..." Your voice drifted into a soft sigh. "That could've been bad."
"That was a close one."
The quiet that followed wasn't uncomfortable, but it felt a little more substantial, if that was the word, filled with that miniscule ache that always bloomed in your chest when he was near.
Spencer stepped closer, his hand brushing against the edge of your desk. His body angled toward you, like even when you weren’t touching, he couldn’t help but gravitate toward you.
“You know,” he said, his voice softer now, “I don’t think she actually suspects anything. But we should probably be more careful.”
"Probably," you replied, drawing out the word in a teasing, sing-song tone. “Unless you’d rather keep showing off how ridiculously well you know me.”
His cheeks flushed a soft pink, but he didn’t look away. Instead, that shy, boyish smile, the one that always made you a little breathless, spread across his lips.
"That's going to be hard," he admitted, voice barely above a whisper. "I noticed a lot about you."
You could feel the flush creeping up to your neck, and you mentally cursed him for how easily he was able to do this to you.
"You're lucky I like you."
His smile widened, and his eyes crinkled at the corners in that way they only came out at specific moments. Like when he successfully performed a card trick for the team or when he stumbled across an original copy of a book at a library sale.
The same one you'd seen when he talked about his mom on her good days, or when you asked him on a date.
You leaned forward. "And since I like you, any chance you'd want to kiss me right now?"
"How could I not, with you looking at me like that?"
The angle was clumsy, your chair too low, his frame leaning awkwardly over, but all of that melted away the second his hands found your face. His thumbs brushed soft circles against the place where your cheek met your jaw.
His lips were soft against yours at first, testing, before growing firmer, more sure. The kind of confidence that came with a hundred familiar kisses before.
Time seemed to slow, or at least for you it did, the rest of the world nonexistent.
The sound of a throat clearing broke the spell, and you jerked back from Spencer, your chair wobbling slightly as you turned toward the sound. You immediately regretted it — your lips felt swollen, your face hot, and there was Prentiss, leaning against the doorframe.
"We were... uh, testing something," you blurted, avidly avoiding eye contact. "You know, like... oxygen exchange! For scientific purposes."
Spencer blinked, then mumbled, "Oxygen exchange? That's the best you got?"
"Shut it," you hissed through gritted teeth, not daring to look at him.
Prentiss arched a brow. "Relax, lovebirds. If this is your idea of scientific research, I'll make sure Garcia doesn't find out. You're welcome."
